Design studio for children. Children's school of design thinking MakeSchool. How to develop design skills in a preschooler with applied tasks

School of design thinking and industrial design Make School is a children's educational project of the industrial design studio Make Fabrication Studio. The studio provides services for industrial design, prototyping and small-scale production using modern digital technologies, develops and launches products of its own design, is a regular participant in festivals dedicated to innovation and modern technologies (Geek Picnic, Maker's Fair, Science Festival). The Center for Youth Innovative Creativity "Make" operates on the basis of the studio.

The Make Fabrication Studio team conducts training courses and workshops on subject design and digital production at the Flakon design factory, participated in the development and implementation of educational programs for the Details Design School, Lomonosov Schools, and a summer camp at Bauman University.

“Grandfather is the editor-in-chief of Yeralash, dad is a famous director, but no one took me to the movies”

Make Fabrication Studio is the first and only Certified Inventor Club Leader in Russia by LittleBits (www.littlebits.cc), one of the leaders in STEAM education. The partnership enables the students of the School to become members of the global LittleBits community. Students can share their inventions on the company's international online platform, learn from practitioners, share their projects with kids from all over the world, and participate in design challenges.

Why is industrial design promising?

The main task of industrial design is to “package” complex and increasingly complex technologies into an understandable and easily usable object by users.
This area is constantly changing. Modern technologies (artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of things, biomimicry) give designers the opportunity to practically not limit their imagination when creating new things. In the future, the world will move from a traditional linear economy (resources-production-use-recycling) to a circular economy (more rational, re-use of resources, the concept of use instead of the concept of ownership). Examples of such innovative companies are Uber, AirBnb, etc.

And in the future, when creating a new product (or redesigning an existing one), an industrial designer will need to think at the beginning of development how the product will be used after it fails or becomes obsolete. This affects the choice of materials, design elements, packaging, user experience design. Therefore, already today it is necessary to rethink the design of almost all existing objects and systems.

What is design thinking and why is it needed?

Design thinking is a method of creating new products and services that are focused on the person and their needs. This approach allows you to effectively create new products that will not gather dust on the shelves like unnecessary inventions, but will be in demand by the market.
In the classes at Make School, students:
— get acquainted with the techniques of design thinking and try to apply them in practice, working on their projects;
– create prototypes of inventions from improvised materials and using rapid prototyping tools (LittleBits electric blocks), which are used today by well-known international companies such as Google X, Ideo, SAP, TechStars, etc.;
— how real industrial designers use sketchbooks to capture their ideas and find inspiration, keep Invention Magazines, which reflect all stages of work on projects;
— participate in international design challenges from LittleBits and learn how to present their projects.

Classes are held:
design-factory "Flacon", Bolshaya Novodmitrovskaya st.
Junior School, Ostrovityanova st., 5
Library №91, highway Enthusiasts, 78k1

As you know, the word design quite firmly settled in the Russian language for a long time. It denotes both the process of activity and its result. The fact is that the English translation of this word is very ambiguous: design is both a drawing, and a sketch, and a plan, and this word can also be translated as a verb - to draw, invent, and so on. Be that as it may, this term denotes something creative, something that is clearly aimed at improving or decorating reality.

Studios, houses and schools of creative development invite interested boys and girls to classes, lectures and master classes, where competent and experienced teachers will share the secrets of the profession, teach children to create and design things with their own hands, and cultivate aesthetic taste. Even the youngest children are happy to join the process and develop fine motor skills, thinking, and creativity.

Designers are in demand in many areas of modern society: it is not for nothing that many universities train professionals who can work in various fields - for example, designers of interiors, clothing, industrial premises, landscapes, etc. Often, the skills acquired in childhood help children to better understand all the subtleties and the secrets of this direction of creativity according to the laws of beauty.

Landscape design of a kindergarten: we think about safety

Yards of kindergartens, as a rule, should be not only beautiful, but also safe for children. One of the main tips for those who are engaged in the design of their territories - instead of filling the site with concrete, it is better to sow it with grass. Preschoolers often do not stay on their feet during active games, and the grass will soften their fall. In addition, it is an environmentally friendly material, the cost of which is quite low. Mobile team games (basketball, volleyball) require wooden flooring - this is also an environmentally friendly and inexpensive way to improve the design of the territory. Do not get carried away with planting a large number of flowers: the guys can accidentally damage them and violate the integrity of the composition. And, of course, you can’t plant plants that can prick children (for example, roses, but this is not very applicable to the northern latitudes of Russia). Rubberized or plastic figures, as well as artificial grass, are also safe objects. But it is important that these materials are of high quality and non-toxic.

How to develop design skills in a preschooler with applied tasks

Performing applied tasks, the guys should be aware that the fruit of their work should be noticeable and implemented in real life. Therefore, the goals become specific: for example, to create a poster for a festival, a business card or an element of interior design. It will not be right if what a boy or a girl creates will simply lie on the shelf. At the same time, children can independently arrange the elements, apply new knowledge and skills. Moreover, experimentation and the flight of fancy are encouraged - many adults can be amazed at the creative thinking of toddlers!

What are closed and open compositions?

Not only the future artist and graphic artist, but also the designer must be familiar with the basics of composition. What are they like? Distinguish between closed and open. The first (which can also be called static or closed) embodies the ideas of solidity, steadfastness, stability and immobility. It is characterized by the main directions of lines directed towards the center, the construction of popular geometric objects according to the shape, taking into account symmetry. The closed composition is distinguished by a clear outer contour. And the open composition gives a feeling of spaciousness, freedom, "air". The lines in this case are not directed towards the center, but away from it. Often there is not one compositional knot, but several, a kind of rhythm is felt.
