Finishing the edge of curtains with a comb. Curtains with a frilled drawstring Sew curtains on a drawstring with your own hands

For the first time, people began to decorate window openings with curtains and curtains back in the Middle Ages. However, at that time, curtains were mainly used to warm rooms and to protect against the penetration of insects. In the original version, they were a rough raw material that was attached to the ceiling. And later, people noticed that in addition to their functional purpose, curtains can be used as a decorative element and an opportunity to demonstrate their wealth.

During the 17th century, this element of decor familiar to us changed dramatically several times depending on fashion trends. It was then that exquisite curtains, curtains, light tulle and curtains appeared that adorn our homes to this day. However, despite the variety of design delights, modern interiors sometimes gravitate towards something simple, light and concise. In this case, drawstring curtains will be the best design for windows of any shape.

Feature curtains on the drawstring

Drawstring curtains are the easiest and most versatile way to design a window opening. Such curtains are attached to a standard cornice or a round rod made of any material using a specially stitched drawstring pocket. Since curtains of this kind are put on a cornice or rod without the use of hooks, they are considered the most convenient in installation and further maintenance. As a rule, the width of the curtain slightly exceeds the width of the fastener, which creates soft vertical folds on the curtain, giving the design weightlessness and lightness.

The length of the curtains on the drawstring is selected depending on the features of the interior, the shape and size of the window opening. For example, when decorating small windows and windows of non-standard shapes, curtains up to the window sill are most often used. If it is necessary to arrange a high or standard window, it is customary to use floor-length curtains.

As for the materials for creating curtains on the drawstring, everything here depends on the style features of the interior and the functional purpose of the curtains. If they perform only a decorative function, you can safely opt for light gas or tulle products. In this case, the curtains will acquire an ideal shape with soft and even folds. However, if curtains should also be a reliable barrier from sunlight or a screen from prying eyes, it is better to choose products from denser materials - silk, satin, velvet, etc.

In addition, curtains on the drawstring are distinguished by a wide variety of design solutions. In the classic version, they can be a flat, monochromatic fabric with finished edges, without any additional frills. However, very often designers decorate the upper part of the curtains with the so-called “scallop”, which hides the drawstring pocket. This unobtrusive detail perfectly completes the style of curtains and complements it with notes of romance. Also, the lower edge of the product can be decorated with a decorative element. As a rule, ruffles, lace, embroidery, etc. are used as decoration in this case.

If necessary, curtains on the drawstring can be combined with other textile products - curtains, curtains, thick curtains, lambrequins, etc.

Curtains on the drawstring in the interior of the premises

Curtains with this method of fastening harmoniously look absolutely in any room. For example, in the bedroom and living room, you can use long curtains, which, due to their conciseness, will fit perfectly into any interior. If there is a need to visually increase the height of the room, then it is recommended to hang the cornice, on which the curtain will be attached, as close to the ceiling as possible. If you want to fill the room with an atmosphere of home comfort, choose wide curtains made of lightweight fabric that will create a thick and even drapery.

In the kitchen, loggia or in the children's room, short curtains on the drawstring, the length of which reaches the lower edge of the window, will look more appropriate. The most harmonious feature of these rooms will complement the curtains with checkered, floral or any other bright prints.

You can attach curtains to the eaves in different ways. It largely depends on the preferences of the owner of the premises, because it is the aesthetic component that is usually the most important. The type of cornice is also a determining factor.

What to look for when choosing?

Fixing the curtains on the eaves is a rather important issue, because the wrong choice can completely spoil the whole impression of the beauty of the curtains and the interior as a whole.

When choosing the appropriate mounting method, they are guided not only by the general style of the room, but also by the density of matter, the type of cornice. For example, you can place curtains on a drawstring only on tubular cornices. For curtain rods that are fixed to the ceiling, only methods such as hooks and curtain tape are available.

Some types of fastening allow you to leave the curtain straight, others contribute to the formation of beautiful vertical folds. In some rooms, more strict options are preferred, in some a touch of simplicity is welcomed.

You need to think in advance exactly how you want to see your window, whether there will be lambrequins, whether the window design will become an accent in the interior, or whether it will simply complement the overall design. Consider whether the overall design will be heavy or light.

The issue of finance is also important. Some types of fasteners are cheap, others cost quite a lot to install, and still others can be made entirely on your own from scraps of fabric.

Installation Features

All options for cornices are divided into two large groups according to the method of attachment: ceiling and wall. Ceiling models are selected when it is not possible to install a wall cornice. Usually, the limitations for their installation include fragile drywall walls or insufficient space for a wall cornice. Also, ceiling structures are selected if the ceiling is not high enough and it is necessary to visually “pull” the room up.

Recently, stretch ceilings have gained popularity. They are usually equipped with splinted plastic curtain rods that can only support a certain weight of the curtains.

In appearance, the cornices are divided as follows:

  • Round. The variant looks like a pipe and is found on the market in various diameters. Round cornices are usually decorated with different decorative tips on each side. The tubular cornice is made of wood, metal, plastic.
  • Baguette. They look like a rectangular or curly plank that covers the entire “stuffing”, safely hiding the guide and hooks. They are made of both plastic and fine wood (a rather expensive option).

  • Strings. The "youngest" of the types of cornices, it is a metal cable, on which the curtain is eventually attached. Made from metal.
  • Profile. Such cornices are easily bent, as a result of which they can be given any shape. The demanded arched cornice is made just from an aluminum profile.
  • Rail (tire). The design is equipped with a groove on which balls with hooks are fixed. At the moment, tire cornices are made mainly of plastic.

Each of these types has both its advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when choosing. Try to study more information about the chosen cornice in order to know about all the strengths and weaknesses of your favorite option.

Each type of curtain requires an individual selection of the type of attachment. These types may vary. Some of them are suitable for attaching all curtains, others allow you to attach only curtains or curtains only. In order to correctly determine the variety, you need to answer a number of questions.

The first and most important of them is logical to designate the issue of style. Each of the styles imposes its own restrictions on the choice of fasteners. To make the curtains look beautiful and harmonious, it is necessary to note the stylistic features of the room as a whole and make a choice in accordance with them.

It is also necessary to note the features of the material from which the curtains are made. For example, filament curtains will look rather strange if you fix them on the grommets, but fixing them on magnets or on a curtain tape is perfect for them.

Window features also need to be taken into account. Plastic windows usually fit more modern cornices and fixtures, while wooden ones - traditional options.

Ties

You have to be careful when using strings. They are not suitable for every style. For example, in a classic room, Loft style, Minimalism, this type of fastening cannot be used.

Almost any material for the manufacture of ties can be selected, from tulle to braid. Most often, however, they are made from the same fabric from which the curtains are sewn.

Ties can be fastened with bows or simple knots, and in both cases they look romantic and lively. Often the choice in favor of such a mount is given in rustic-style interiors.

But sometimes the choice of any other option, and not strings, is impossible, as in the above photo. Ties help emphasize the beauty and unusual design of the cornice and look very appropriate.

loops

Tie-like loops fit any interior. A touch of romance and playfulness is missing here. Like drawstrings, loops are usually made from the same material as the curtains, but sometimes it's better to choose a different fabric. Usually this rule applies to children.

All kinds of loop decor are welcome, for example, applications. Depending on the style of the room, the method of decoration is also chosen.

This type of fastening is popular because it is very convenient: to hang the curtains on hinges, you just need to pass the cornice through them. Loops are deaf or with a fastener. In the second case, the loop at the base is equipped with Velcro or a button that allows you to detach it from the cornice without removing the cornice itself.

It is possible to "mix" the loops of different curtains with each other, resulting in a very interesting effect, as in the above photo.

Eyelets

This is a universal type of fastening, suitable for absolutely any interior. Eyelets hold fabrics of any density well, while the upper edge of the curtains does not deform, but delicately folds into even assemblies.

Window curtains and curtains are attached to the grommets to delimit the interior space. This mount looks very elegant and modest, while acting as a bright accent throughout the interior.

Eyelets can fit into any interior, depending on the decor of the fabric itself. For example, a gathered curtain on the grommets fits perfectly into the Provencal interior.

drawstring

The curtain is a "pocket" through which the cornice is passed. At the same time, the top of the curtains turns out to be invisible.

Most often you can find curtains on the drawstring, since it is this type of fastening that is best suited for light, thin fabrics. Heavy curtains with a drawstring cannot be found, since it is not used in classic interiors such as Baroque or Rococo.

Most often, curtains on the wings are hung in rustic interiors. Also, this method of fastening is used for fastening curtains "cafe", as in the photo.

Braid

More often you can find such a name for the braid as a curtain tape. It is attached from the inside of the curtains, allowing you to adjust their width. One of the advantages of curtain tape is that after washing, such curtains do not need to be “adjusted” again to the size of the cornice. At the same time, the same quality is a minus: ironing curtains on a braid is not particularly convenient.

The curtain tape allows you to later hang the curtains on hooks and fix them on the rail cornice. Other types of cornices are also suitable for fastening.

Usually curtains on a braid are hung in several rows: tulle, curtains, lambrequin. The image shows one of these options.

Rings

Since Soviet times, curtains on rings have been especially popular, and for good reason. This type looks no worse than eyelets, but at the same time it allows you to choose any rings you like or combine them with each other, for example, if the room is made in the Boho-chic style.

Most often, rings are used in a Techno-style room, but you can also find them in a classic interior (example in the photo). Rings sewn to curtains certainly require the ability to remove the curtain completely. They look best on a tubular cornice.

magnets

Fastening curtains with magnets is an alternative to the usual fastening with hooks. In this case, the magnet performs the same role as the Velcro for loops: it allows you to quickly and easily remove the curtains from the eaves. The choice of different options here is huge: you can give preference to almost invisible fasteners, or you can prefer decorative magnets decorated with rhinestones. Depending on the mood that needs to be created in the room, magnets are also selected.

Curtains with magnets look best on a modern string cornice. This combination looks very stylish. The photo shows a cornice and magnets made in the same theme.

Often, magnetic mounts are complemented with clips for curtains of identical design.

Clips, hooks, clothespins

As usual, the curtains were fastened with the help of this type of fastening. Today, clothespins and clips are made of both metal and plastic. They are extremely inconvenient to use, as they spoil the fabric of the curtains, leaving puffs on it. For thin fabrics, this type of fastening is not suitable categorically; with the existing alternatives, it is much more logical to choose magnets as fasteners.

Drawstring curtains are the simplest and most versatile curtain model. Depending on the type of fabric, they can play the role of curtains or light tulle. This type of curtains will please any hostess. After all, curtains on the drawstring are used in any room, creating with their help a relaxed light atmosphere. This option is suitable for interiors decorated in ethnic, Scandinavian, rustic style. Designers are sure that this type of curtains allows you to literally transform the room using various additional decorative elements and details.

Where to apply

If you consider yourself one of the people who value convenience, simplicity and democracy, your house must have curtains on the drawstring in the photo. The use of curtains is recommended for those rooms that are shaded or face the north side. Light light curtains allow not only to decorate the window opening in an original way, but also to maximize the penetration of sunlight into the room. In cases where greater decorative effect is required, curtains can be decorated with all sorts of decorative elements.

  • On the covered terrace or attic.
  • In the nursery or living room, which have windows in the form of an arch.
  • Curtains in a large cage look especially cute in the kitchen. To create a harmonious design, it is desirable that the cage is repeated on kitchen textiles.
  • When creating functional zones.
  • At the cottage or in a country house.

Tailoring process

Given the simplicity and functionality of the curtains, many housewives prefer to sew curtains on the drawstring with their own hands. This process is quite simple, requiring no special sewing skills. If in doubt, a trial option can be to sew a small curtain from a piece of any fabric, and then proceed to create a curtain for the window.

How to sew curtains on a drawstring

First of all, it is necessary to measure the width and height of the window opening. To the numbers obtained, add 2-3 cm for the hem on each side. To accurately measure the height of the opening, you need to measure the distance from the eaves to the floor. When sewing a curtain with drapery, multiply the width of the window opening by a factor from 1.5 to 2.6, depending on the frequency of folds on the future product. For example, if the width of the window is 2 m, and the drape factor is 1.7, then the width of the fabric must be at least 3.4 m.

After the size of the canvas is determined, we add 2 cm to the resulting number to create a pocket for the drawstring. This is necessary in order for the finished product to move along the eaves. If you need to decorate the top of the curtain with ruffles, then add a few more centimeters necessary for sewing ruffles.

Let's start sewing

First you need to cut out the canvas according to the measurements that were taken. If the finished product should be decorated with ruffles, frills and other elements, we tack them to the canvas with our own hands.

At the top edge we make a double hem, which should be enough to form a drawstring. The width of the fold should be such that the wire or rod on which the curtain will be attached can easily pass into the hole. Then the hem is basted and sewn on a typewriter.

A good housewife takes care of her house and decorates it so that all the inhabitants feel comfortable. And of course curtains help to create coziness. Today I propose curtain processing, or rather the top of the tulle with a flounce or, more simply, “with a scallop”. That is, we sew the curtain tape not to the edge, but with an indent of 1-2 cm.

Let's do a calculation before opening. Choose the desired length of tulle. For example, I have 251 cm. The bottom of this tulle is treated with a weighting agent, so the allowance for bending the bottom is not involved in the further calculation. The width of the curtain tape is 4 cm. The “comb” will be 1.5 cm. And so, the allowance must be added to the total length: 4 cm (width of the curtain tape) + 1.5 cm times 2 (double comb) \u003d 7 cm (allowance). And so we cut the tulle with a length of 251 + 7 = 258 (cm). We process the side seams of the tulle.

Let's make a template from cardboard with a 7 cm allowance.

Now, using the template, iron the allowance. Fasten the edge of the tulle with pins to the ironing board, place the template and, combining the edge of the template and the cut of the tulle, steam the allowance along the entire length. We transfer the pins as the tulle moves along the “ironing board”.

We choose threads to match the fabric. Next treatment will be done from the front. We put the curtain tape under the bottom, fasten the curtain tape in two three places with pins, retreating from the edge of 1.5 cm, the bottom of the curtain tape coincides with the cut of the allowance. The transparent tulle fabric makes it possible to control the result and there will be no mistakes if the 7 cm allowance is ironed evenly. We give a line along the upper edge of the curtain tape, as we move, we remove the pins and transfer them below. I use two or three pins. You can not pin the pins, but then you need to control the allowance so that it does not move along the gear rack.

We give the second line along the bottom edge of the curtain tape, also on the front side, here there is a temptation not to use pins, but I still recommend fixing the allowance. Before us is a curtain with a “comb”, it remains to “refresh” it with an iron and attach it to the window.
