Handmade table with glass top. DIY glass table - possible assembly options. Materials and tools

They are different in their forms, it is important that they are not only stable and reliable in operation, but also emphasize the interior of the entire furniture ensemble.

Sometimes the beauty of supports affects the choice of a product, attracts with its spectacular parameters, regardless of the price.

Do-it-yourself glass table legs can be borrowed from design proposals, their manufacture in various forms.

The stability of the structure as the main value can be achieved by installing the countertop on one support or on several, taking into account its dimensions and configuration.

The cover can be:

  • round
  • oval
  • rectangular
  • square

Different background:

  • tinted
  • transparent
  • matte

With legs:

  • wooden
  • metal
  • plastic

Based on the main characteristic parameters, you can decide on the choice of a product suitable for the interior.

The shape of the furniture surface is spatial perception, for example, an oval table is placed against the window in a small room. In a large room, the best option would be round, around you can place guests on attached chairs. Square models, together with rectangular ones, are suitable for any apartment, as long as the size of the product is chosen correctly.

The background influences and depends on the overall color scheme of the interior. It is impossible to break the dissonance of tonality in the walls with transparent glass, regardless of their color.

The Gothic style is able to emphasize the black tint, the massiveness of the matte cover will allow the inhabitants to feel reliability, if at the same time there is the main stable detail - its supporting element.

The main constructive objects for the table are its legs with a design solution:

  • use high-tech, framing with metal, chrome, aluminum
  • apply the classics, arranging the support of the coating with the help of wooden parts
  • direct artistic taste towards Provence with artistic forging

Decorators use different techniques, these decisions determine how surprising the design will be:

  • will attract the eye with the massiveness of the constructed support in the form of bizarre weaves of roots
  • will give airiness to an unusual design element
  • protect the framing base from destruction

When the interior requires expanding the functionality of furniture, you need to use it not only for viewing magazines, but to hold festive feasts behind it, then they arrange an additional sliding mechanism.

Masters advise using durable metal fittings, it is designed for long-term operation, unlike plastic, which cannot withstand repeated transformations.

What material attracts the consumer

Metal glass table legs can be chrome or forged. Chrome plated steel with the addition of powder paint will emphasize the style of the room. Stability is provided by a steel pipe with a metal core, a similar design can be installed for any purpose of the product. These supports carry out the production of furniture with strength characteristics that allow not to clutter up the usable space.

The forged frame weighs a lot, which does not allow such tables to move freely, but they are easy to care for and they serve for a long time.

Despite the massiveness of these models, their artistic manufacturing options are inexhaustible, presenting the legs as:

  • curved algae
  • trees
  • flowers
  • plexus of patterns

These products are painted in different colors suitable for the interior, able to emphasize its elegance and protect it from environmental influences.

Tree with pros and cons

Wooden elements harmoniously coexist with the same furniture.

They are made using wood:

  • ash
  • walnut
  • cedar

Positive signs are responsible for the choice of such legs:

  • long service life
  • visual perception
  • warmth of interaction with human feelings, carved elements create home comfort

Negative sides:

  • increase in the weight of the entire structure when choosing massive elements
  • special care, the need for periodic treatments, finishes to maintain the appearance, protection from external influences
  • low resistance to mechanical damage in soft rocks

The supporting elements are made straight, curved. Sometimes they play a greater role in the interior than the tabletop itself, which, covered with a tablecloth, will not be visible, curly legs will be presented for viewing.

Feature of exotic fittings

The artistic delights of manufacturers go beyond the boundaries of traditional preferences in the choice of materials for the manufacture of furniture items.

A good addition to the design of the room can serve as:

  • the use of African, if the transparent tabletop will be held by intertwined bamboo stems
  • the use of a frame made of vines, willow twigs in a glass table will bring the country house closer to the natural environment, the presence of a rustic style - any flexible plant material can serve as raw materials, they can be lined with a power frame and separate weaving from elastic and durable products
  • the arrangement of glass fixtures holding the same lid creates an ideal interior for a wealthy homeownership, where they prefer to dine from crystal dishes

People who are constrained in their budget are offered the option of installing plastic supports, they are less in demand, since their performance in relation to the service life is weak. These designs have proven to be light, mobile, suitable for country estates.

Available mounting methods

One choice of legs is not enough to be limited, you need to be able to firmly attach them to the surface.

An example for fixing metal legs is the description:

  • each item is turned upside down to drill holes
  • fixing elements in the form of suction cups are mounted in them, planted on an adhesive
  • make markings on the areas where the supports will be installed, after degreasing them with acetone or gasoline

It should be noted that the substances used for gluing mirrors are not suitable for transparent ones. These substances, in addition to drying for a long time, leave unwanted marks. In this case, there are special high-quality adhesives.

Lubricated elements with a fixing agent are applied alternately to the marked points for a minute, directing them under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, which improves its polymerization. The marking must be done with great accuracy, after gluing the position of the part cannot be corrected.

The operation of furniture with glass elements requires special care, the purchase of detergents, soft napkins. The appearance of scratches, defects that spoil the appearance is eliminated by paste, polishing.

On the video - a master class from Marat Ka "Table with a glass top":

Glass products have always had a special sophistication, beauty, refreshed any interior with brilliance and lightness. A glass table with a properly selected base has weightlessness, this is especially important in small rooms. However, the high price of glass furniture often stops the consumer from purchasing it. You can solve this problem by making a glass table with your own hands. Approaching the process with care and responsibility, strictly following the instructions and advice of specialists, the result will be a beautiful and unique piece of furniture.

Glass products have always had a special sophistication, beauty, refreshed any interior with brilliance and lightness.

Before starting the process of making a glass table and buying the necessary materials, you need to carefully consider how it should look, decide where in the room it will stand, how exactly it will be used.

You can solve this problem by making a glass table with your own hands.

According to the functional characteristics, it can be:

  • magazine,
  • written,
  • kitchen,
  • and even computers.

A glass table with a properly selected base has weightlessness, this is especially important in small rooms.

By design, they are divided into:

  • mobile,
  • transformers,
  • sliding,
  • with extra shelf.

Before you start the process of making a glass table and buying the necessary materials, you need to carefully consider how it should look.

Depending on the shape of the glass top, they can be:

  • rectangular and square,
  • round and oval,
  • segmental (angular),
  • non-standard.

When choosing an underframe (be it just legs or a finished structure with a frame for a glass surface).

When choosing an underframe (be it just legs or a finished structure with a frame for a glass surface), special attention should be paid to the overall interior of the room in which the table will stand:

  • metal legs are ideal for high-tech style;
  • forged or wooden legs paired with glass belong to the classic or loft style, while being suitable for any color scheme of the interior;
  • if the main idea of the room is made in the style of minimalism, the choice can be stopped on a base made of glass or thin metal, while the table itself is best equipped with wheels so that it can be moved to the right place at any time;
  • in the case of a rustic interior, you can use rough wooden materials (logs, raw bars), and oval or round tabletops will look best in such a pair.

Particular attention should be paid to the overall interior of the room in which the table will stand.

Advantages, disadvantages

The glass table has many positive qualities.

  1. High aesthetics and versatility allows you to use such a piece of furniture in almost any room with different design solutions. In addition, a wide range of glass products allows you to choose the perfect countertop (be it simple transparent glass or matte, white or colored).
  2. Glass products are environmentally friendly, do not absorb odors, greases, paints, resistant to chemical materials. These characteristics are ideal for the kitchen.
  3. The technology used in the manufacture of glass makes this piece of furniture very resistant to impacts, chips, scratches, and a special film will hold all the pieces even after breaking, eliminating the risk of injury.

Along with many positive qualities, there are also negative aspects of the glass tabletop:

  1. Glass is not able to absorb sounds, so when in contact with other objects, a lot of noise is produced. To solve this problem, you can use special stands. But in no case should you set the glass table, as it will completely lose its main role - transparency and weightlessness.
  2. On the glass, with its high reflectivity, any, even the most insignificant traces and stains are visible. To solve this problem, it is enough to choose the right cloths for polishing the countertops and cleaning products, place the table away from light sources, or choose a frosted glass look.

Wooden legs paired with glass belong to the classic or loft style, while they are suitable for any color scheme of the interior.

Tools and materials

The main stage of preparation involves choosing how to make a glass table with your own hands. An important role in this is played not only by the desired result, but also by what material is easiest to work with. For a novice master, chrome-plated metal legs are best suited.

Glass products are environmentally friendly, do not absorb odors, greases, paints, resistant to chemical materials.

To make a glass table with your own hands you will need:

  • a sheet of ordinary or special glass, the thickness of which will be at least 6 mm;
  • 4 legs;
  • 4 suction cups for legs;
  • construction adhesive for bonding glass to metal, which is transparent after drying;
  • sandpaper and glass polishing paste;
  • vegetable oil and gasoline (acetone);
  • Chipboard or plywood to ensure that the glass sheet is laid flat.

It is very practical: glass care involves ordinary washing or wiping, even without the help of detergents.

To work, you will need the following tools and improvised materials:

  • metal ruler,
  • marker or pencil
  • glass cutter (diamond or roller),
  • glasses and gloves for protection during work,
  • rubber mallet,
  • drill and grinder,
  • file or emery bar,
  • felt circle (for polishing the edge with paste).

These characteristics are ideal for the kitchen.

Glass cutting and processing

Making a table with a glass top with your own hands is not so difficult, the main stage of this process is cutting the tabletop from a sheet of glass of the desired shape and processing its edges.

The technology used in the manufacture of glass makes this piece of furniture very resistant to impacts and chips.

To ensure a high-quality work result, a sheet of glass should lie on a flat surface (chipboard, plywood), and it must also be thoroughly washed and polished. The presence of even the smallest particles of dirt can lead to chipping and uneven cuts.

A special film will hold all the fragments even after breaking, eliminating the risk of injury.

Using a pencil on the underside of the glass, it is necessary to make markings; a thin metal ruler is laid along the line on top. When using a glass cutter, it must be borne in mind that a roller cutter, unlike a diamond one, must be pressed against the glass more strongly, having lubricated it with vegetable oil. For people who are not familiar with such a tool as a glass cutter, it is better to pre-practice on a similar material, make a few test headings using cheaper materials.

Along with many positive qualities, there are also negative aspects of the glass tabletop.

The technique of working with it differs from what type of glass cutter is available:

  • using a diamond glass cutter, you need to make one correct and sharp movement, excluding stops and repetitions, without applying special pressing pressure;
  • if a roller glass cutter is used, the pressure must be at least 2 kg., you can cut several times on the same section of glass if the result was previously unsatisfactory.

Glass is not able to absorb sounds, so when in contact with other objects, a lot of noise is produced.

The next stage is the processing of the edges of the glass blank. To do this, first use a file (remove the largest irregularities), a grinder and sanding skins, to protect against glass dust from getting into your eyes, put on construction goggles. It is necessary to clean off the sharp edges in stages, starting with the largest, ending with the smallest sandpaper. At this stage, you can not only secure the edges of the glass, but also give them the necessary shape:

But in no case should you set the glass table, as it will completely lose its main role - transparency and weightlessness.

On the glass, with its high reflectivity, any, even the most insignificant traces and stains are visible.

At the very end, with the help of paste and a felt circle, the edges of the glass are polished.

The easiest way is to make a rectangular or square surface. To make an oval or non-standard glass tabletop, you first need to prepare a layout (pattern), and to cut a round tabletop, there is a special circular glass cutter.

To solve this problem, it is enough to choose the right cloth napkins for polishing the countertops and cleaning products.

Assembly, decoration and elimination of defects

To make a glass table with your own hands neat and meet the basic requirements, the assembly process must be taken very responsibly.

The finished part is turned over and markings are applied to the places where the legs will be located (7-10 cm from the edge and about 13 cm from the corner). Next, holes are made in the upper part of the legs for suction cups, glue is applied and fixed. Often the action of the suction cups is enough to securely hold the countertop, but it is better to fix the fasteners by applying glue to them.

If the more affordable plain glass was used in the manufacture, there is a risk of scratches, such a surface can easily break.

To make the finished table look neat, it is important to choose the right glue and not overdo it with its quantity. After drying, it should become completely transparent and not be visible through the glass surface.

After the glue dries, the do-it-yourself glass table is ready, you just need to wipe it and install it in the place intended for it.

The presence of even the smallest particles of dirt can lead to chipping and uneven cuts.

However, at this stage, many people think about how to make a glass table with their own hands the most unique, what methods of decorating and decorating exist?

Using a pencil on the underside of the glass, it is necessary to make markings; a thin metal ruler is laid along the line on top.

The easiest way to decorate the surface of the tabletop is by attaching a special adhesive film with various patterns to its lower part. For creative people, an excellent solution would be to use stained glass technology, which allows you to apply the desired images to the surface using stencils and paints.

Using glue and various glass and plastic pebbles and rhinestones, fixing them to the surface, you can get a bright and glamorous piece of furniture.

The main stage of this process is cutting the tabletop from a sheet of glass of the desired shape and processing its edges.

Matte patterns on the glass surface are very popular in any interior. They are applied using sandblasting or etching technology. Both methods involve the use of a stencil and the creation of a matte pattern on the surface of the countertop by mechanical or chemical means.

If you want to make a table with glass with your own hands with a simple transparent surface, without additional decorations and patterns, you can improve it by installing an additional shelf. The manufacturing process of such a piece of furniture is similar to that described, only instead of ordinary legs, special ones are needed - with a hairpin, on which pre-drilled holes in the glass shelf will be put on, and intermediate washers. For reliable fastening, use a transparent construction adhesive.

For a novice master, chrome-plated metal legs are best suited.

It is important to keep the novelty of the appearance, which can be quite difficult if the surface is glossy. During operation, small abrasions and scratches appear on it, which can be eliminated with GOI paste. It must be crushed and used as a polish, cleaning out the irregularities of the glass. In addition to such a paste, you can find polishes with diamond particles.

Having shown imagination, this piece of furniture can be turned into a work of art.

Adhering to the sequence of actions, using high-quality materials and taking into account technological advice, everyone can make a glass table with their own hands, and by showing imagination this piece of furniture can be turned into a work of art.

The main stage of preparation involves choosing how to make a glass table with your own hands.

VIDEO: DIY glass table.

Almost every item in the interior, made with your own hands, is able to bring something completely new and refresh the existing environment. One of these options can be a wonderful glass table or countertop, which you can make quite easily and independently, even at home.

Glass table can fit into the interior of any style.

But before starting to carry out work, you, first of all, need to carefully read the advice of experienced and qualified specialists. They intelligibly and step by step tell how to make a glass table with your own hands, what features it has and what kind of tool you will need for this, and what you should pay special attention to.

Features of the glass product

You should immediately decide what kind of shape, as well as the type of glass table you want to end up with - these can be the following options:

  • with single solid top;
  • tables-transformers;
  • with or without frame.

In addition, they can differ in the shape and size of the table top, the type of glass used (frosted, transparent, colored, multi-colored, and so on). Thanks to all these features, the glass table not only harmoniously fits into various interior styles, but also emphasizes them favorably. And in some cases it is one of its central objects. In addition, you should pay attention to other design features, for example, the shape of the legs, the presence of a shelf under the table top, and so on.

Design characteristics

  1. The glass table has a very stylish and interesting appearance - it fits perfectly into absolutely any modern interior, and at the same time creates a special feeling of weightlessness.
  2. Relatively light weight.
  3. Practicality and versatility. This can be achieved thanks to the latest innovative technologies that make it possible to use reliable, durable and high-quality glass.
  4. Safety.
  5. Hygiene.
  6. High resistance to aggressive chemicals (detergents and cleaners), as well as high temperatures and humidity.
  7. The products are easy to maintain. They are easy to clean and grease is not absorbed into such a surface.

Despite all the above features, the manufacture of a glass table has a number of negative points:

  1. Fat stains are clearly visible on the surface (especially in sufficient light). That is why you should think carefully before placing a glass table near the window.
  2. Such tables are quite noisy - this manifests itself when the dishes come into contact with the surface of the countertop. You can, of course, cover them with a tablecloth, but in this case, the main meaning and main idea of a glass table is lost. It is best to use special stands instead.
  3. Permanent external prints also irritate the owners of glass tables quite strongly.

Preparatory work

To make a glass table, you need to prepare tools for working with this material.

Before embarking on the process of manufacturing a reliable and attractive glass table, it is necessary to determine exactly where exactly you intend to place your new element, what task it will perform - the main or secondary one. Immediately after you have fully decided on the main purpose of this device, you will need to draw a sketch in full accordance with your entire interior space. Be sure to indicate on the drawing the exact location of the legs and the size of the glass top itself. To get started, you will need the following tools:

  • diamond or roller glass cutter;
  • metal long ruler;
  • ordinary rubber mallet;
  • pliers that have rubber pads so as not to break the glass itself.

You also need to take care of the characteristics of the glass itself. It can be tinted, transparent, colored, textured, mirrored, etc. When choosing a canvas, the best option would be to use a tempered material, the thickness of the glass used for the table should be from 6 to 12 mm.

Glass must be extremely clean, dry and wiped.

To completely clean the surface of spraying, you can use a solution of ordinary baking soda and rags. This is extremely important, because in the course of working with various dirty materials, whole splits can occur, and the glass cutter will begin to wear out faster. Glass prepared for cutting should be placed on a special table with a flat surface or on a massive sheet of plywood or chipboard. The material must fit snugly with the entire plane to the table. Under the line of the intended cut, it is also worth putting a special bar, thanks to which you can easily draw the contours, lines and much more you need. The most ordinary thick wire can also act as a bar - the most important thing is that it be visible under any surface of the table.

Glass cutting technology

It is better to cut glass using a special device consisting of a wide stand and a fixing ruler.

Cutting table glass must be done exclusively on a metal ruler - directly, and it is preferable to use the thinnest one here. Highly qualified experienced specialists can make a full-fledged cutting of any glass, even “by eye” - for this you need to measure the length you need with an ordinary tape measure, then move the glass itself to the edge of the table and cut it with a glass cutter. You can also mark the line of the cut itself with an ordinary felt-tip pen, and then, without using a ruler, you will need to draw a glass cutter along the surface of the glass. This is not such a difficult job, and training can give you confidence and increase the chance of a correct cut without chipping. Tip: for work, it is worth preparing all the tools in advance, then you need to moisten the glass cutter with ordinary vegetable or any other oil. It is advisable to cut the glass in one go.

If you are pretty bored with the old interior design, you should pay attention to glass tables, which make it possible to successfully update the interior of any room. At the same time, it is not necessary for a home master to buy such a table, but you can do it yourself. Self-production of such furniture, of course, is not an easy task, but it will still be cheaper than buying a ready-made glass table. Let's talk today how to make a glass table at home.

Features of glass tables

Basically, glass tables with a monolithic top are popular today. However, there are often so-called transforming tables, which provide the opportunity to increase the length of the tabletop. The most important difference between glass tables is the appearance of the tabletop. It can have a variety of sizes and shapes: square, round, rectangular and oval.

Tables are made of tinted, frosted or transparent glass. Frosted glass is often greenish in color due to the fact that it is the natural shade of this material. In the interior, the transparent design of the glass table looks weightless. This property of the material makes the glass table indispensable if you need to visually lighten the space. An opaque table of the same size and any design will always look more bulky and massive.

A glass colored countertop will definitely attract a lot of attention. It is also necessary to say that the color of the glass structure can emphasize the style. So, for example, a black glass table for the kitchen makes it possible to create a “glamorous” or “Gothic” interior. You get a good contrast if you complement the black dining table top with white chairs.

The underframe and legs for glass tables are most often chrome-plated or wooden, less often - wicker, plastic or forged. The glass table in some cases is framed, then the frame is made of the same material as the underframe itself. There are also tables with a shelf under the main tabletop, but they, however, also have their own characteristics.

Before buying, ask the seller for permission to sit at this table, so you will check whether it is comfortable for you to sit at it and whether your knees rest on the table. Any rubbish should not accumulate in the shelf for the table, that is, the space should be in perfect order. Otherwise, there is no point in buying a glass table. But during the reception of guests, you can put sweets or fruits on the shelf.

Advantages and disadvantages of glass tables

Glass tables have a lot of advantages, here are the main ones:

  1. Stylish appearance. Glass tables in the interior of any room look amazing and make the most pleasant impression. Transparency, shimmer, shine and reflection make glass furniture inimitable. Glass tables look especially harmonious in high-tech interiors.
  2. Practicality. Modern technologies allow the manufacture of glass tables with the expectation that it will be practical, reliable, safe and extremely stable. In addition, such glass furniture cannot be smashed to smithereens, because the composition of the glass used to make the countertop contains special films that hold the fragments and help avoid injury.
  3. High durability. Tempered glass is resistant to high temperatures and humidity. Glass countertops are absolutely unaffected by harsh chemicals. They are hygienic and easy to care for, do not absorb greasy and coloring substances, which is a significant advantage over ordinary kitchen tables.

However, some owners did not like glass tables, due to the large number of stains and prints on them. Dirt and crumbs are clearly visible on glass tables, and the surface of the tabletops is quickly scratched. Paired with dishes, a glass table creates a lot of noise. However, these problems are easily resolved, and these shortcomings are not a reason to refuse to buy a stylish glass table.

The problem with permanent prints on the glass is solved by choosing a table made of frosted glass of the tinting you need. To avoid soap stains on the glass surface, it is enough to buy a special liquid for glass care. The noise problem can be eliminated by using coasters.

However, one more significant drawback should be remembered - the high price of a glass table. Glass tables are very stylish furniture: they are effectively combined with chrome surfaces, wrought iron and lacquered wood. Therefore, their cost is much higher than the price of ordinary kitchen tables.

Making a glass table with your own hands

Let's look at the technology of making a glass table at home.

1. Preparatory work

At the very beginning of the process of making a glass table, it is necessary to determine where your future table will still stand, whether it will serve as a coffee table in the hall, or be used in the kitchen for eating. After you have decided on its purpose, you need to draw its sketch in accordance with the interior of the room. Be sure to indicate on the drawing the location of the legs and the size of the tabletop.

To work, you will need the following tools: a roller or diamond glass cutter, a long metal ruler, a rubber mallet, and rubber-tipped pliers to break glass. You should also take care of the glass itself. It can be colored, tinted, transparent, textured and mirrored. When choosing a canvas, it is best to use a tempered material, the thickness of the glass for the table should be 6 - 12 millimeters.

Glass must be clean, dry and at room temperature. To clean it of dust, you can use a solution of baking soda and a rag. This is very important, because when working with dirty material, a split can occur not along the notch line, and the glass cutter itself will fail faster. The glass prepared for cutting must be placed on a table for cutting glass, chipboard or a thick sheet of plywood. The material should fit snugly against the table with the entire plane.

You need to put a thin rod under the line where you will cut. The diameter of the rod should reach approximately 3 millimeters. Next, a ruler is placed on the glass so that it is located from the line of the intended cut at a distance of approximately 2-3 millimeters. It must be remembered that the glass cutter must be pressed with a force of 2 kilograms, this can be checked in advance using ordinary scales.

2. Glass cutting technology

It is better to cut glass using a ruler, it is preferable to use a thin metal one. Qualified craftsmen are able to cut glass “by eye”, while measuring the required length with a tape measure, move the glass to the edge of the table, navigate along this edge of the table and pass with a glass cutter. Also, the cut line can be marked with a felt-tip pen, and then, without a ruler, a glass cutter can be drawn over the glass.

It would be great if you practice a little on scraps before using the workpiece. This work is not so difficult, but training will add confidence to you and increase the chance of cutting glass the first time. Soak the glass cutter wheel in vegetable oil before cutting from the far side of the glass. You should try to cut the cut line with a glass cutter at a time.

If cutting is performed with a diamond glass cutter, then an almost imperceptible colorless trace remains on the glass. The pressing force is directly proportional to the sharpness of the edge. Glass is broken by hand, but it is better to do it in special protective gloves. The glass should be positioned so that the cut line coincides with the edge of the homemade glass cutting table. Press hard on the glass and it should break straight along the line.

The remains or very narrow edges are broken off with a glass cutter, capturing it with a special slot that is present on the glass cutter, or with pliers, on which you need to put on rubber linings in advance. In addition, paper folded in several layers can be placed under the jaws of the pliers. In the case when the glass is poorly cut, then to increase the depth of the cut, it is necessary to knock on it with a glass cutter's hammer from the back side, or with another tool - for example, an open-end wrench.

When working with a roller glass cutter, it is necessary to press harder. The beginning of cutting is carried out from the far edge of the web. If, with a sharp glass cutter, the incision does not come out, then it is necessary to ride the roller back and forth in one line, dipping it first in kerosene. If the incision does not work on the first attempt, then it is necessary to re-manipulate from the reverse side.

In the case when it is necessary to cut glass with complex outlines or with a curvilinear shape, a stencil is first made. After that, place the stencil on the glass and carefully circle it with a glass cutter. A round cutting of glass is made in a similar way: first, a cut is made in a circle using a template or in another way, and then, in the part in which the glass will break off, rays are made and broken off in parts.

When it is necessary to cut reinforced glass, first you need to draw a notch line along the smooth side of the sheet with a roller glass cutter. After that, a groove is scratched along the notch line with a hard sharp tool to the mesh itself. Next, the glass is turned over and then broken. The wire is then carefully bitten off or cut.

3. Finishing the edges of the countertop

After you have successfully cut glass for a table, there are usually notches and ridges left on it, which must be removed without fail to protect against cuts or injuries. It is best to process the edges of the glass on special machines, but this can also be done at home, be sure to wear cotton mittens.

To do this, take an old file or an emery bar. If you use a file, you should prepare a small container with turpentine or kerosene to wet the tool. Next, file along the edge of the glass. You have to work very carefully, especially if you are processing thin glass. In order for smooth edges to appear, you need to move the file or timber evenly along the glass.

After that, it is necessary to grind and polish the edges of the countertop. For this action, you need a grinder or drill. Glass grinding is carried out at a low speed - about 1200-1700 rpm, slowly, as it is afraid of overheating. First, a larger sandpaper is placed on the grinding wheel and the edge of the profile you need is formed.

Next, put a disk of medium grain size and repeat the previous operation, while it is useful to moisten the glass with a thin stream of water. Then the edges are processed with a fine-grained disk. The last stage of processing the edges of the table is edge polishing. This is done using a special paste and a soft felt circle. Polishing is done with the same drill or grinder.

4. Attaching the legs to the table

Now you should think about how to fix the glass on the table. To install the legs of the table, you need to make a hole in each created leg from the top of the end part. Suction cups are attached to these holes using special strong glue for this purpose. Further, after the glue has dried, it is necessary to mark on the countertop with a felt-tip pen and a ruler the places where the legs will be installed. Such places are recommended to be degreased with gasoline or acetone.

The glue used to attach the mirrors is visible through the transparent glass surface and dries for a rather long time - which is unacceptable if there is no additional fastener in the manufacture of glass glass. It follows from this that it is necessary to use special, highest quality types of glue in the process of making a glass table.

Russian manufacturers produce pretty decent glue of two varieties: "glass-glass" and "glass-metal". As well as other types of special compositions, this glue also has its own characteristics - it dries, polymerizing in ultraviolet rays, 300-400 nm long. The time for complete "drying" of the adhesive composition depends on the power of the lamp used. Primary gluing takes about thirty seconds.

Glue the legs to the glass top one at a time and wait until they grab. And only then irradiate until the final polymerization of the adhesive. Please note - tearing off the leg and redoing it will not work, so mark the attachment points carefully. Carefully dose the amount of glue, of course, you can remove its excess with a sharp knife, but this work will not bring pleasure. So you made a glass table with your own hands!

The glass table needs careful care. It is necessary to wipe the table with artificial suede or a soft microfiber cloth: after these materials, the least amount of streaks remains. You can also use special products for washing mirrors and glasses, which are sold in household chemical stores. But still, if you have children in your house, we strongly recommend that you reduce the cleaning time with the help of "chemistry", since sooner or later you will put food on the table, on which particles of the products used may remain.

Sometimes, due to the tricks of our kids or through negligence, scratches appear on the glass, spoiling the appearance of the product, but I want everything to be perfect. In this case, there is a simple solution - grinding with GOI paste. Such a paste must be crushed into very small crumbs so that the mass is homogeneous.

Next, you need to take an ordinary cotton swab and dip it in the paste on all sides so that the cotton wool is completely covered with a layer of crushed substance. And after that, start polishing the scratch with the paste, while not pressing hard on the stick. The time period of one approach is 10-15 seconds, after that it is necessary to remove the paste from the glass, apply a new portion of the crushed paste on a cotton swab and repeat this process again.

How many sets you need to do depends on your patience, the scratches themselves, and what kind of glass the table is made from. But if the work is completed to the end, the glass surface, which will be absolutely scratch-free, will be your reward. Also, in addition to GOI paste, there are many other polishing substances - Polarit and final polishes, which include diamond particles. Many owners choose toothpaste as a polish.

In addition, you can use the following option. It does not consist in removing scratches, but in hiding them. To do this, it is customary to use ordinary colorless nail polish. It must be carefully applied to the scratch, while not going beyond its edges, and allowed to dry well. If the scratch is quite deep, then the procedure must be repeated more than once.

Remember that each layer should be allowed to dry fairly well before applying a new layer. And in order to avoid the appearance of scratches, stains and chips, it is recommended to put special napkins on the table, of which there are a great many on sale today.

Thus, a glass table will look better in the kitchen than, for example, a wooden one. You can also buy a table made of plastic, but still a glass one will be much more beautiful and elegant. Also, a glass table would be appropriate in the living room near the sofa. What is there! It can become a centerpiece in your interior, especially if you made it yourself.

Tables made of glass look appropriate in any interior. Their sleek and airy appearance does not overwhelm the space, leaving the room visually spacious and uncluttered. From a material such as glass, you can make a serving, coffee, computer or even dining table, and it is quite possible to make a structure with your own hands.

Such interior items differ in shape, design and materials. As for the geometry of the tabletop, the glass table is:

  • round;
  • rectangular;
  • triangular;
  • square;
  • oval;
  • have an unusual curly shape.

Depending on the design features, there are such types of tables:

  • transformer;
  • table with bottom shelf;
  • sliding table;
  • mobile structure;
  • monolithic table and others.

Such furniture can also be made from various types of glass. For example, a coffee table can be made of black, tempered, tinted, frosted, clear glass or triplex.

Not only the tabletops, but also the underframe and legs of the structures are distinguished by a variety of designs. The most common options are materials such as wood or chrome-plated metal. Forged tables with glass look very rich and elegant, which are chosen for interiors in a classic style. A rattan table with glass looks simpler, but fits well with most designs.

Preparatory stage

Having decided to make a glass table with your own hands, you have probably decided in advance on its location and role. Depending on where this piece of furniture will be placed and what function it will perform, a preliminary sketch should be made on paper, taking into account the characteristics of the room in which you put the table. On the sketch, you need to indicate the area of \u200b\u200bthe countertop and the location of the legs.

To make a glass table, prepare the following materials and tools:

  • glass thickness from 6 to 12 mm;
  • special glue for glass;
  • cleaning agent;
  • acetone;
  • file or emery bar;
  • legs for construction;
  • suction cups for legs;
  • sunflower oil;
  • plywood or chipboard on which you will cut glass;
  • paste for polishing the material;
  • marker or marker;
  • ruler and tape measure;
  • glass cutter;
  • hammer with a rubber head;
  • rags;
  • goggles and gloves;
  • grinder with a grinding wheel.

In work, you should use only clean and dry glass, on which there is no dust and other, even the smallest, contaminants. You can clean the material with a simple solution of baking soda using a soft cloth. If the glass remains dirty, it may break away from the cut line.

It is most convenient to cut glass on a large sheet of plywood or chipboard, and the material should be in contact with the table with almost no gaps and pressed as tightly as possible.

Features of glass cutting

It is most convenient to cut glass using a thin and long metal ruler, or you can draw a line in advance with a felt-tip pen, so that you can subsequently lead along it with a glass cutter. If you are new to this business, then it is better to practice on an unnecessary piece of glass, and only then proceed to create a table.

Please note that the line that you will draw with a glass cutter should preferably be done at a time, and in order for the tool to work easier and slide better, its wheel must be lubricated with vegetable oil. When working with a diamond glass cutter, a very thin and almost imperceptible line remains on the material. Putting the glass to the edge of the table so that this line coincides with it, the material is broken along the notch line. The pressing force should be approximately 2 kg. When breaking glass, be sure to wear protective gloves so as not to cut your hands, and your eyes must be protected with glasses.

After you break off the main part of the glass, sharp protrusions or extra pieces may remain on the cut. You can remove them with pliers by wearing special rubber pads. If there are no such linings, use paper folded in several layers.

Glass cutting is carried out from the far edge, making a sufficiently strong pressure on the glass cutter. If you work with a sharp tool, but the incision does not work, grease the disk with kerosene and draw along the same line several times. If you are not sure that the cut is the right depth, turn the glass over and repeat the procedure.

If you're making a round coffee table with glass or any other complex curved shapes, it's easiest to use a stencil for ease of use. Having cut out the circle according to the stencil, draw rays from it with a glass cutter and break off the glass in parts.

Reinforced glass is cut in a special way. First, a glass cutter is carried out along the smooth side, and then, with the help of a sharp tool, a deep hollow is scratched to the grid. After that, the glass is turned upside down and broken off along the notch line. The mesh is bitten or cut off.

Worktop processing

After cutting along a fault line, sharp protrusions often remain on the glass, which should be removed. In production, end processing is carried out on special machines, but at home, improvised tools can be used for this purpose. Please note that for this work you will also need to protect your hands with thick cotton gloves or mittens.

You can clean the places of cuts with a file or an emery bar. The file in the process of performing manipulations should be periodically moistened in turpentine or kerosene. When working with thin glass, you need to be very careful.

The next step is polishing the ends, for which a grinder with a grinding wheel is used. The speed of the grinder should be small and be 1200-1700 rpm so that the glass does not overheat. In the first run, you should use coarse-grained paper, then change it to a finer one, and as a final step, you can grind the ends with the finest-grained paper itself. During operation, the glass can be wetted with water. A special smoothness can be achieved using a felt wheel or a special glass polishing paste.

To make the countertop more attractive and unusual, there are several ways to decorate glass. The following methods are often used:

  • decoupage;
  • glass etching;
  • drawing a sandblasting pattern;
  • toning;
  • image printing;
  • stained glass drawing;
  • the use of double glass with a decorative layer of flowers, stones, shells, coffee beans and other elements.

Decoupage and stained glass painting are made from the "inside out" of the countertop, so that the drawing is not damaged during operation. In addition to the methods described above, a glass table can be decorated with decorative lighting, which looks very impressive, especially at night.

Leg fixation

Before mounting the legs in each of them, it is necessary to make a hole on the end side. These holes are needed in order to fix special suction cups in them. For greater strength, the suction cups are put on glue.

While the glue dries, mark the places on the countertop with a marker where the legs will be attached. In these areas, it is necessary to degrease the surface with acetone or gasoline.

As for the glue, it is not recommended to use the composition used for mirrors in the manufacture of a glass table, as it dries for a long time and shines through a transparent surface. For a glass table, it is better to purchase a special high-quality glue. On the Russian market, you can find 2 popular varieties of such materials: glass-glass and glass-metal compositions. To polymerize such an adhesive, it must be exposed to an ultraviolet lamp.

The legs are glued to the table one at a time. First, the element is lubricated, put it to a pre-marked place, wait about 30-60 seconds, after which an ultraviolet lamp is directed to this area and left until the composition is completely polymerized.

Since it will be impossible to dismantle the legs after the final curing of the glue, the places of their attachment should be marked very carefully.

A glass coffee table requires special operating conditions. First of all, we note that you need to handle it carefully, trying not to break the countertop. Caring for such a table is not difficult, you just need to wipe the glass from time to time with a soft cloth or a piece of microfiber using a window cleaner.

Scratches sometimes appear on the glass table. A special GOI paste will help to correct such a defect. It is pushed to the state of very fine crumbs, applied to a piece of cotton wool, a stick or a swab, after which the damaged surface is polished. You don't need to press hard. The scratch is treated for 15 seconds, then the paste is washed off and the procedure is repeated again. In some cases, the number of approaches may be large.

There are other ways to eliminate or mask scratches on glass. You can buy the Polarit product or some of its analogues in the store, you can use a simple toothpaste, although its effectiveness is much lower. You can mask the damage with ordinary clear nail polish.

To prevent scratches, it is better to place napkins or small bamboo mats on the glass table.
