We grow cedar at home. Siberian cedar is a resident of taiga forests in our gardens. When and how to plant a tree

Having studied the administrative and soil situation of cities, we ask you to familiarize yourself with

on the citywide territories of forest parks, kindergartens and schools, on private territories and HOA sites.

For boarding you will need:

  • Ennobled place (better if a little remote from roads and gas pollution, salinity and trampled soils).
  • In the conditions of the city, the place is agreed with the city administration, or with the chairmen of the HOA, or with the administrations of organizations with closed territories.
  • Marked landing sites.
  • Bayonet shovel, garden wheelbarrow, watering can or buckets.
  • Fertile soil or prepared mixture (humus, peat and coniferous litter; if the soil is clay, then sand) from 5-10 liters to 2-4 wheelbarrows, depending on the method of planting in a hole or on a hill / in a hole.
  • Mulch for powdering the earth around the seedling after planting - chopped bark or lying sawdust, dry leaves, grass, needles, nut shells.
  • Water for irrigation: 1 to 2 buckets per seedling.
  • Pegs to designate a small seedling and its fence, best of all with a diameter of 4-5 cm, 1 - 0.75 m high, from 3 to 8 pcs. depending on the shape of the fence of your choice.
  • Seeds of ground covers (for example, white clover) for sowing behind the trunk circle.
  • Studied and printed out our planting recommendations :)
  • And, of course, the cedar seedlings themselves, from a proven nursery!

Imagery when landing:

Planting cedars is a serious matter - you are shaping the future of your garden for tens and hundreds of years to come!

You are planting a beautiful tree - a symbol of strength and health - so treat planting with JOY!

Cedars first accumulate energy from the universe and from the pure hearts of people, and then, from a certain age, they radiate it by giving it away.

Our favorite way of thinking when planting trees is:

"Let the Earth be filled with fragrance and Light!"

Boarding times:

Early spring while the soil is moist. If planted in dry soil, when the snow waters have already gone, the seedling will take root worse, even with careful watering.

In the south, autumn planting is appropriate, when there is still a month or two before frost. With a closed root system, you can plant later.

In the north, it is necessary to plant no later than mid-August, so that the damaged roots have time to grow back. For a closed root system, the planting date can be shifted to the beginning of autumn.

Location selection:- Choose areas protected from trampling. Protection can be - remoteness, low attendance of places, planting among shrubs, fences, forest park areas. - Cedar loves a "fur coat", but does not like a "hat".

While the cedars are small, it is difficult for them to grow in completely open wind-blown areas. They need protection from the wind - trees or shrubs around. When they grow up to be adults and powerful, they need this environment so that they are not knocked down by strong winds. - Most suitable good illumination for the best development of decorativeness, stability and fruitfulness. But it can also grow in partial shade, eventually taking its place in the upper levels of the surrounding vegetation. – Combination of cedars in one group with deciduous trees is not recommended.- Cedar easily develops on acid neutral soils.- Adult cedar is a powerful tall tree. Usually cedars are planted along the edge of the plot with the expectation that, when it grows up - the shadow fell on the house, bathhouse, utility block, car parking, etc.

At first, the seedling takes up little space, and after a few years, the lower branches can be removed and one trunk will remain below - it will not interfere - like pines in urban forest plantations. – Between trees, we recommend choosing distance starting from 4−5m for small gardens and 6-8 meters for alley or sparse planting.

In the case of using cedars for fencing, seedlings can be planted through 3 meters. In a few years, if you do not cut the lower branches, tree wall will be impassable. – Cedar is a self-pollinating species, but for better cross-pollination, it is advisable to plant not single trees, and groups of 3−4 trees.

- Seedling distance from buildings and foundation we recommend from 1.5−2m. In 100 years, the cedar will create a threat to the foundation (or what remains of it 🙂 Some cedars grow up to 800 years! The usual age of cedars in plantings is 200-400 years.

Landing methods:- If a place with permanent vegetation and a rather fertile layer of 25 ... 30 cm and below lends itself to digging, then it is enough to dig a hole up to 10 liters in volume and use a little brought fertile soil or a mixture of humus, peat and coniferous litter. - If the soil lends itself to digging, but is infertile, they dig a large hole up to 1 meter in diameter and 50 cm deep fill it with fertile soil. - If the soil is heavily gravel or heavily compacted below 15-20 cm of the fertile layer, then you can choose to land on a hill 30-50 cm high on the brought fertile soil. - If the soil cannot be dug up, drills, tractors or excavators are used to make large landing pits. - In damp areas with a high level of groundwater, cedars are planted in bulk hills from fertile soil, 0.4-0.8 m high, diameter from 1 m to 3 m, depending on the size of the seedling. - On sandy soils, a layer of 7-15 cm of loam or clay is laid at the bottom of the planting pit to retain nutrients and moisture at the roots of the seedling.

LANDING IN THE PIT:

1. Dig a large hole

[According to science, the required hole is a meter in diameter and 50 cm deep. In cities, if a large hole is not made, the roots will rest against impenetrable ground. ]

The topmost fertile soil of 20 cm must be removed and set aside separately from the rest of the excavated land, without mixing.

The soil from the depth of the pit, after planting, is distributed along the trunk circle (and ideally not used at all).

When the entire hole is dug, it is filled with a mixture of top fertile soil or a mixture of humus, peat and coniferous litter. If the soil is clay, then 1/3 of the sand is added to the pit.

2. In the center at the bottom of the planting hole, form small cone of soil.

3. Further, it is controlled by two people. One man holding a seedling vertically in the center of the hole, straightens the roots in a cone. Second person falls asleep roots up to the root collar with soil, including from the upper layer previously deposited separately.

4. In order for the earth to lie more densely to the roots and to remove air cavities, you need to carefully, so as not to tear the roots, compact the soil with water from a watering can and with your hands.

5. Mulch the earth in the trunk circle with crushed bark or cedar shells, coniferous litter or others.

6. If you sow white clover along the edge of the seat, it will not allow other weeds that are undesirable for the cedar neighborhood to tighten this place and will continue to cover the soil for years even if regular mulch is not added.

7. Immediately (not in a day and not in an hour) to water the seedling with a crown, preferably from a watering can. 10 liters per seedling, but not all at once, but in portions, so that the water has time to soak in without washing away the soil! Thanks to watering, air bubbles at the roots are removed and the earth acquires a uniform structure.

8. Then restore the verticality of the trunk, add fertile soil and mulch. As a result, the level of compacted soil in the trunk circle should remain no lower than the surface of the earth around, and preferably 5-10 cm higher.

The soil will eventually settle anyway, but it is impossible to allow the seedling to end up in a hole for life! In the spring, the snow melts in the sun and the seedling ends up in water, which freezes at night (recall that water expands when it freezes and this destroys the trunk).

Advantages hilltop landings:

  • in the conditions of the city, where often the soil is not fertile, very dense, poorly air and water permeable both for tree roots and for a shovel, the easiest way to make an embankment desired soil from above.
  • roots provided deeper fertile layer;
  • tree roots are better provided with oxygen;
  • spring flowerbed warms up faster and the roots begin to grow earlier;
  • with the onset of frost in autumn, the roots harden and adapt to winter faster;
  • tree bark does not swell rainy autumn and snowy winter;
  • easier to adjust the soil level at the root collar- if the soil settles after watering, then it needs to be poured along the perimeter of the mound, if the root neck of the seedling is too deep - you need to rake the soil, reducing the height of the entire mound (otherwise the root neck will rot).
  • The sapling on the mound is much more noticeable even for uninformed persons with lawn mowers, strollers and other random vehicles :)
  • Over time, an enlarged mound can be made gentle and barely noticeable or overlaid with beautiful stones, thereby creating a well-groomed look and caring attitude towards him.

LANDING ON THE HILL:

1. To plant trees on mounds or flower beds, the earth around the seedling site is dug up to a depth of 20 cm and a small narrow cone is poured from the soil and compacted.

2. Before planting, it’s good to dip the roots of the seedling into a clay mash - this is clay diluted in water to the density of sour cream (our ancestors also added mullein).

3. Act further together. One holds the seedling above the ground so that the root neck of the seedling is at the level of the top of the hill. The second one fills the roots up to the root neck with soil, forming a mound with a horizontal upper plane, gently compacting it.

Depending on the chosen height of the mound from 30 cm to 50 cm, you will need from 2 to 4 wheelbarrows of soil. The horizontal top plane of the mound is needed so that rainwater can easily soak into the mound and not roll off.

5. The diameter of the mound must be increased by backfilling as the root system grows. This is the convenience - you do not need a lot of soil at once, but you can add a nutrient mixture or fertile soil every season. For example, autumn leaves, simply laying them out in a circle, especially in urban areas.

6. After planting, immediately water the seedling from a watering can, 0.5-1 bucket of water is enough, if the soil with which it is sprinkled is also slightly wet.

Make sure that watering does not erode the mound, and the root neck of the seedling remains at soil level, that is, not buried.

8. Behind the trunk circle, sow the hill with ground cover plants. White clover covers the soil with greenery without interfering with the cedar, protecting it from unwanted weeds and thanks to it the mound looks very neat for years. Therefore, we scatter the seeds along the edges of the mound a little on and under the mulch. At the right time, the clover will rise.

CARE- In the first year of planting, be sure to monitor soil moisture and regularly water with a watering can, preferably with a crown. You need to water in the morning or when the midday heat subsides, otherwise the soil will not absorb moisture. - It is necessary to add a layer of mulch annually to stimulate the formation of adventitious roots in the cedar, which enhance its growth. Mulch retains moisture in the upper soil layer, which is especially important when growing cedar on light sandy loam, and on heavy clay soil it protects its root system from being squeezed out in winter. - The soil under the cedars cannot be dug up and there is no need to loosen if there is a good layer of mulch 5-7 cm. - Side branches cannot be removed from the cedar. The more needles, the faster it grows. Removing dry branches without damaging the bark of the trunk does no harm. - If small cotton balls appear on the needles (under them are small Hermes sucking aphids), wash them off with a strong stream of water and treat the shoots with ACTELLIK or several times with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. - If, nevertheless, the near-trunk circle sank and the seedling ended up in a hole, then you can save it by digging a trench to drain water in the direction of lowering the site. It is important that the seedling in the spring thaw is not flooded with water, which in the night frost will become ice and expand, damaging the trunk.

7 " NOT" !

1. DO NOT overdry. Remove from individual wet packaging immediately before planting, otherwise the roots will dry out in the air and wind and there is a high probability of death.

  • Dip the roots in a clay mash or wrap them in damp moss and several layers of damp newspapers, burlap.
  • Soak seedlings with a closed root system before planting in a bucket of water along with a container until air is released.

2. Very careful with the kidneys. Fragile. With the loss of the apical kidney may die.

3. DO NOT bury the root collar. STRICTLY. The root neck is the conditional boundary of the transition of the root system to the trunk.

4. Spread the roots in a planting hole or on a cone of soil, so that the roots are in a different plane.

5. DO NOT bend the roots. STRICTLY.

6. In the spring, DO NOT mow the grass nearby. Let it stand in the shade of the grass. It burns in the open sun in the first years after transplantation and develops very slowly.

7. At the same time, remember that the cedar should NOT be overgrown with grass. Especially cereals, such as wheatgrass, as they inhibit the growth of cedar. Keep the trunk circle under mulch.

O SIBERIAN CEDAR PINE or CEDRE

Cedar is an evergreen coniferous, powerful tree. It is decorative, winter-hardy, curative, durable and gives nuts.

Compared to pine, cedar has a more lush crown - needles grow from twigs in bunches of five pieces, ordinary pine has two pieces, in addition, the needles are softer, longer and more fragrant, they secrete healing phytoncides.

Cedar is a rare tree in the city for various reasons, and if you find out, it is often due to subjective decisions. Although there are fresh examples of thousands of cedars in the cities of Finland, on Sakhalin, in Severodvinsk.

For those who are patient, the difficulties in bringing cedar closer to the city and into the city itself are more than compensated by its everlasting greenery (when bare deciduous trees do not please the eye of a person in the cold season), its power and its energy, which has formed a particularly reverent attitude among the people.

As a basis, we took several instructions from the Internet. But having studied from, checked for logic and compared with our own experience, we realized that it is impossible to plant cedars and trees in general in this way.

We are Vadim and Anastasia Karabinsky from the Karelian Zalesie family homestead settlement.

You will rarely meet a real cedar on a personal plot. The tree is quite difficult to grow, because it needs special conditions for several years. But those owners who were not too lazy to plant and carefully care for the cedar received an unusual decoration of the garden composition. The article contains the experience of growing a tree from a nut or seedling with instructions and examples in the photo, how to get a beautiful adult plant step by step.

For planting far from their native range, it is not the cedar itself that is adapted, but the Siberian cedar pine. It belongs to another genus of trees, but the people call it cedar. Real cedar is a more thermophilic tree and is distinguished by a crown of enormous width. A dense and tall pine is just able to fit perfectly into the landscape composition of the site. It does not take up much space, but it gives the garden landscape the effect of peace and sophistication.

Attention! When planting a cedar pine, use pine nuts or ready-made seedlings from a nursery or store.

Growing a tree from is a difficult process. It is important to choose good seeds. You will have to find a few cones and carefully peel a couple of dozen seeds out of them in order to have some margin of safety. The seeds that have started to grow will also need a lot of care. However, growing cedar from seedlings is even more difficult: they do not take root well in the new land.

Planting a cedar pine with nuts: seed preparation

To obtain seeds, it is better to use not ready-made pine nuts, but whole cones. Because manufacturers of nuts for food thermally process the material. This has an extremely negative effect on the viability of seeds. The best time to start work is from September to December.

Hull 20-30 seeds and prepare them for planting:

  1. Rinse with warm water to remove the resin layer. It will block the access of water to the seed during further manipulations. Surface treatment with a sponge or toothbrush also helps in this matter.
  2. Sort out planting material. Seeds should be free of mold and bad smell.
  3. Disinfect them by placing them in a 5% solution of potassium permanganate. Soak for a couple of hours. You can also use fungicide Maxim.
  4. Perform stratification. Place the seeds for 3 days in a container of cold water (0 °C). Water needs to be changed daily. Remove the seeds that float to the surface: they are already guaranteed not to germinate.
  5. Simulate wintering for planting material. Mix it with forest turf, clean coarse sand and peat. Pour all this into a wooden container with ventilation holes, pour over and place in a cool place at a temperature of +4 ° C for a period of at least 3-6 months. Many people use a refrigerator for this purpose.
  6. Moisten the soil a couple of times a month and check the seeds. If mold has appeared on any, remove it from the box.

Some growers simply mix seeds with sand. Then placed in a bag of cloth. Whichever method you choose, it is ideal to have the planting material ready by March or April. The shell of at least one of the nuts should crack. If this does not happen for a long time, transfer the seeds to a slightly warmer place.

Attention! Seeds of cedar with the correct storage method remain viable for up to 8 years. However, it has been noticed that it is more efficient to plant fresh specimens.

Planting cedar nuts

The first seed home will be a small pot, up to 0.2 liters. Fill it with real forest soil or purchase a store-bought substrate for coniferous plants. Deepen the seed by about 2 cm. Sprinkle pine sawdust or needles on top.

cedar sprout

The pot should be in a cool place. At temperatures above +18 ... +20 ° C, the seed may not hatch. Also, the plant is contraindicated in direct sunlight. Moisten the soil from time to time, keeping the top layer slightly moist.

Advice. Plant 1-2 pcs. inefficient. Use all specimens that have undergone stratification and overwintering. Seed germination of cedar pine is only 10-15%.

With proper care, the seed will hatch in about 2-3 months. These will be barely noticeable sprouts. Up to 5 years, the annual growth of the seedling will be only 6-7 cm. For the summer, take the pots outside for hardening. Rooting in open ground goes well at the age of 5-6 years, when the tree grows to 25-35 cm. Although there is a practice of earlier planting.

Sometimes cedar seed is immediately planted in a permanent place. Procedures are performed in the fall, just before the topsoil freezes. This is important because rodents can eat nuts. Cover the planting site with a layer of dry foliage, at least 5 cm. Such seeds will sprout only after a year. The germination rate is the same as when planting in pots.

Advice. In spring, seedlings should be protected from birds, because the sprout appears with a nut at the top. Cover young plants with light material or netting.

How to plant a cedar pine with a seedling

Whatever seedling you have - grown on your own or bought - carefully prepare the ground for it. Cedar pine, in general, likes rocky soils or loams with good drainage. You can achieve comfortable conditions for any type of soil by mixing gravel and sand with it. 3-year-old or older seedlings are effectively planted in open ground only in early spring. Tree care includes the following manipulations:

Cedar pine is a rather capricious plant
  • find a shaded place for a young tree for the first time;
  • water moderately;
  • make mulch from needles or grass;
  • feed the seedling with mixtures containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium;

Advice. To increase the chances of adaptation, you can lay out large stones around the tree. They become a home for fungal organisms that have a positive effect on the development of cedar.

Gardeners have noticed that a seedling with a formed root ball takes root well. A year before transplanting the plant to a permanent place, an incision should be made on the ground around the trunk, cutting off only the horizontal roots. In this case, the tree should not be older than 6-7 years. Mature plants take root much worse than young ones.

It is easy for young seedlings indoors or seedlings on the site to die, even with careful and correct care. Therefore, in self-planting and growing cedar pine, it is important to stock up on patience, perseverance and a sufficient amount of planting material. And do not sprinkle ashes on your head at the first failures.

Growing cedar pine: video

A handsome cedar with a powerful crown and incredible properties is quite possible to grow at home. The Siberian healer is able to heal not only the body, but also the spirit. And even if the healing forces are put aside, the decorative charm of the mighty giant will serve as a good incentive for planting cedar in the backyard.

Just planting a seedling is not enough to grow a beautiful and healthy tree. In response to care, the cedar will delight more than one generation of owners with a spreading crown. Each plant, including cedar, requires additional care and nutrition in the form of macro- and microelements, vitamins and minerals.

For normal growth and development, plants need carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, which they receive from the air. Seedlings are saturated with the necessary macro- and microelements from the soil. Macronutrients include: nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, sodium and sulfur. Trace elements are manganese, boron, zinc, cobalt, iodine, etc.

The task of the gardener is to apply fertilizers in a timely manner so that the cedar grows quickly and develops correctly, as well as closely monitor the condition of the shoot.

Proper land

Cedar is a rather whimsical plant and is meticulous about the soil. If you land this Siberian shrew in unsuitable soil, he will often get sick or die. The ideal option is a lot of humus and moisture. In this case, the conifer grows quickly, and additional care is reduced to a minimum.

In the case of sandy soil, it is necessary to prepare a place for planting cedar. To do this, you need to dig a hole with a depth and diameter of at least one meter, and then fill it with suitable soil. Substrate composition: turf, humus and sand in proportions 3:2:1. It is in such soil that the Siberian giant can be planted without the risk of loss.

The soil for cedar must be mulched, that is, provided with covering material. Better than natural origin. Mulch retains moisture and coolness in the soil, but allows air to pass through.

A mixture of foliage, twigs and moss is perfect. This bedding imitates the natural growth conditions of cedar.

How to grow a plant near the house

It is good to supplement the soil with mycorrhiza. This is nothing more than a mutually beneficial union of plants and fungi. Mycelium or simply mycelium entangles the roots of trees, due to which the plant receives more moisture and nutrients from the ground. For conifers, such a neighborhood is very welcome. You can take mycorrhizal soil from the nearest forest.

When and how to plant a tree

There are two options for planting cedar: from seeds and seedlings. The first way is more accurate and more common. If the choice fell on the second method, then you need to plant a tree at the age of 3-5 years. During this period, the seedlings will better take root in a new place.

How to improve productivity?

We are constantly getting letters in which amateur gardeners are worried that due to the cold summer this year, a poor harvest of potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables. Last year we published TIPS about this. But unfortunately, many did not listen, but some still applied. Here is a report from our reader, we want to advise plant growth biostimulantswhich will help increase the yield by up to 50-70%.

Cedar, like all fir trees, does not accept loneliness. For proper development, it is better to plant at least two trees side by side. Someone believes that trees communicate with each other, gardeners have a different point of view. Pair is necessary for cedar for pollination and better development of seeds, that is, cones. The optimal distance between trees is from five to eight meters.

The best time for planting is autumn. In early October, when the ground has not yet frozen, cedar seeds are sown in prepared soil and covered with spruce branches. This will protect them from rodents. If everything is done correctly, shoots will appear in the spring.

When planting in spring, the seeds must be stratified within two months. First, the seeds are treated with a weak solution of manganese (0.5 percent). This procedure will protect them from diseases.

Then the nuts are soaked in warm water. This procedure takes a week. Water must be changed every day. Then the cedar seeds are placed in sand and kept at room temperature for 50 days. Sand can be replaced with peat. A prerequisite is humidity. Periodically (at least once every two weeks), sand or peat is thoroughly mixed and watered.

Seeds with sand or peat are poured into a wooden box. Sufficient air supply must be ensured. To do this, holes are made in the box.

When the roots appear, the seeds are taken out into the street or cleaned in the cellar. Here they will be until the moment of landing, that is, until the beginning of May. The storage temperature is not below zero degrees.

What bait to choose

In order for the seedling to take root in a new place, develop correctly and grow quickly, organic, mineral and bacterial fertilizers are used.

  • organic

Everything that is of natural origin is called organic. Fertilizers of organic origin include manure, peat, compost from household waste, humus, sawdust, bone meal and bird droppings. All types of dressings contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc. necessary for the plant, that is, macro- and microelements.

  • mineral

Top dressings in the form of compounds of chemical origin have nothing to do with a natural product, but contribute to the growth and proper development of plants. Such compounds are called mineral fertilizers. They saturate the soil with all the nutrients necessary for plants.

Mineral supplements are produced in the form of monopreparations, which consist of one element, or complex products with a more diverse composition.

  • Bacterial

Preparations with bacteria do not contain nutrients, but have a positive effect on the growth and development of shoots. These top dressings consist of microorganisms whose task is to enhance the biological and chemical processes in the soil, thereby improving the root nutrition of plants.

The bacterial preparations used in agriculture include rhizotorfin, nitragin, phosphorobacterin and azotobacterin. The use of fertilizers with microorganisms requires special care and strict adherence to the instructions.

Proper application of fertilizers

There is a certain algorithm for applying fertilizers for cedar. It consists of three main steps: preparation, sowing, nutrition.

How do you know what your pet is missing?

If the plant lacks nutrients, it will report this to the host with color or poor growth. It is enough to carefully observe the behavior of the seedling in order to understand the cause of the disease and prevent the death of the plant.

Signs of insufficiency of macro- and microelements:

  • Lack of nitrogen: needles turn pale yellow (completely or only tips), buds bloom late, slow growth in height, early fall of needles.
  • Lack of phosphorus: the needles acquire a red and blue color, its growth is noticeably reduced.
  • Lack of potassium: the needles twist, become covered with brown spots, the plant is unstable to fungi, does not tolerate frost.
  • Lack of boron and calcium: lightening of needles, growth retardation.
  • Lack of manganese and iron: the needles turn brown, fall off.
  • Lack of sulfur: the needles acquire a yellow tint with a bluish tint.

Newly sprouted shoots must be protected from birds. To do this, they are covered with a film.

At the age of 10 years, the cedar should be shaded. Canopies can easily cope with this task.

Decorating the ground around the tree with stones, on the contrary, will only benefit. Under them, over time, a fungus forms, which is useful for cedar. Decorative elements should be large and certainly flat.

Manure for cedar is best used in the form of humus. In this form, it is not so dangerous for the roots. Fresh fertilizer can burn the root system and kill the tree.

If during wet weather a white coating forms on the cedar, it must be washed off with water and laundry soap. Soap should be dissolved in warm water and washed off with a sponge.

Cedar is an amazing tree, the healing properties of which people have known since ancient times. Pine nuts, resin and wood - all have value for man. With proper care and quality nutrition, the tree begins to bear fruit after 18 years and bestows its owners on an annual basis.

That is why we decided to publish an exclusive interview with Oleg Gazmanov, in which he revealed the secrets of getting rid of joint pain, arthritis and arthrosis.

Attention, only TODAY!

Cedar is one of the most beautiful representatives of conifers. The duration of his life is 450-500 years, and the cedar pine reaches maturity by 80-85 years. This long-liver pleases not only with sprawling long needles, but also with delicious pine nuts, rich in vitamins, microelements, fats and protein.

Cedar can be grown from a nut

You can meet cedars both in summer cottages and on the territory of country houses. Most often they are planted as annual seedlings, but not many people know how to grow cedar from a nut at home.

planting material

Growing a cedar from a nut is not an easy task, because there are no high-quality planting raw materials for sale. Nuts that you can buy in the store are absolutely not suitable for growing cedar at home. Most often they are peeled and fried. Not many decide to germinate seeds on their own, because it is much easier to buy an annual seedling and plant it in the ground.

Buying pine nuts from your hands is also not a good idea. Seeds retain their germination capacity for 1 year, in the second year it decreases by 50%, and after that the seed does not germinate at all.

In addition to the shelf life of nuts, its conditions may also be violated, which negatively affects the planting material.

To grow cedar from seeds at home, you will have to collect pine nuts yourself. This can be done in places where cedar pine grows in late October, November. At this time, the collection of ripe cones begins. You can take fallen seeds or seed cones, but they can be damaged by mold or rodents, and there is a high probability that this will be last year's crop.

It is better to pick a cone directly from the tree, but this is not easy to do because of the height of the cedar pines. Pickers use long sticks with mallets at the ends to knock the cones off the top. These seeds are more likely to germinate.

To collect seeds, it is best to pick a cone from a tree yourself.

Preparing seeds for germination

To plant seeds, you need to extract them from the cone. This is done quite simply. The cone is placed near heating appliances or quickly burned with flames from all sides. Under the influence of temperature, the scales open, releasing the seeds. On an industrial scale, special devices are used that crush the cone without damaging the pine nuts.

After extracting the seeds, you need to take care of their disinfection. To prevent many fungal diseases, pine nuts are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate for 2-3 hours before planting.

Planting seeds

An important point in growing cedar from seeds is stratification - the creation of conditions as close to natural as possible. In the forest, pine nuts, falling into the ground in November-December, hibernate under the snow and germinate only in spring. Creating something similar at home is quite simple:

  1. After soaking in potassium permanganate, pine nuts are planted in a specially prepared substrate to a depth of 1–2 cm. Too deep planting prevents seed germination.
  2. Seeds planted in a container are watered so that the whole earth gets wet, but does not become sour from excess moisture. Otherwise, the nuts will start to rot.
  3. 5–7 cm of snow is laid on the surface of the substrate. The container is covered with polyethylene and put on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator for 3 months. If weather conditions do not allow you to immediately cover the plantings with a snow cover, then this can be done later.
  4. Once a month or as the soil dries, the nuts are watered with water at room temperature. It is advisable to use melted snow.

After 3 months of stratification, the container with the cedars planted in it is taken out of the refrigerator and placed on the south window. Most often, the first shoots appear already in the second week.

Cedar sprouts well on the south window

Substrate for planting seeds

The quality and composition of the soil play an important role in growing cedar at home. Seeds should be germinated in a mixture of:

  • river sand;
  • fine crumbs of gravel;
  • peat.

Sand and gravel are calcined before planting. This prevents the development of many diseases, kills mold spores. Sometimes cedar seeds are germinated in a mixture of coniferous sawdust and fertile soil. Such a composition is very similar to the soil of a cedar forest, but it dries up quickly enough, so you need to carefully monitor the watering of sprouted nuts.

Before planting nuts, the soil should be calcined

Seedling transplant

When the cedar sprouts have reached 3 cm, they must be planted in separate containers, where they will grow for the first year. The main thing when transplanting is to carefully handle the delicate roots so as not to damage them.

Drainage is laid at the bottom of the pot, you can buy it at the store or use cedar cones. The second option is better, because it brings the growing conditions closer to natural ones. The substrate is made from river sand, fertile soil and coniferous sawdust.

A month after transplanting, you can start hardening the seedlings. First they arrange airing, and after a while they take it out into the street.

You can not leave a young tree under the scorching sun, but the shade does not suit him either. You need to put a pot of cedar in a place with a scattered shadow - under another tree or a canopy.

For the first 10 years, the cedar pine grows very slowly, but with good care it will grow rapidly. It is better to plant a seedling in the ground up to three years. Such a tree is well received and easily tolerates winter.

A three-year-old seedling can already be planted in the ground

young tree care

If it was possible to plant a cedar in the country house and the tree took root, then all the requirements for growing pine were carefully observed. Now you can start caring for the seedling. You need to remember the following recommendations:

  1. For full development, forest trees enter into symbiosis with mycelium. This useful neighborhood will help strengthen the cedar grown in the country. To do this, take 5 handfuls of forest litter and pre-crushed caps of ripe forest mushrooms, soak it all in a bucket of warm water. A day later, the cedar is watered with the resulting mixture.
  2. It is impossible to loosen the earth around the tree, because the roots are located very close to the surface, there is a possibility of damage.
  3. The soil around the seedling is mulched to retain moisture and control weeds. Crushed cedar or other coniferous cones, sawdust, pine nut shells are used as mulch.
  4. The plant is watered as the soil dries out, but the cedar reacts painfully to waterlogging and may die. Every year in spring and autumn, you need to make fertilizer for coniferous trees. If you take good care of the cedar for the first 10 years of its life, then it will actively grow and bear fruit well.

Cedar is a beautiful and slender tree, which can be called majestic without exaggeration. The unforgettable aroma of its needles, which many people like, also deserves attention. Therefore, it is natural that many gardeners are interested in how to grow a cedar from a nut at home, especially since it is much more economical than planting from a seedling.

Cedar can be grown from a nut. This is a cost-effective task

Nut selection and preparation for planting

Growing cedar from seeds is not the easiest, but quite realistic task.

The first thing that provides for its solution is a careful selection of nuts:

  1. Seeds intended for cultivation should not have an unpleasant odor.
  2. Nuts, the surface of which is covered with mold, cannot be considered suitable for planting.
  3. To avoid fungal infections, all seeds are treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate (0.5% potassium permanganate solution is enough). The average duration of the procedure is 2 hours.
  4. For planting, nuts collected on the slopes of the Sayan or Altai are best suited.

The most suitable age for pine nuts used for cultivation is no more than three years. Practice shows that germination in such cases is maximum, and therefore young seeds should be a priority. If there are no such nuts, then others will do, whose age does not exceed 8–10 years.

To grow a healthy tree, you should choose nuts carefully.

Having decided on the seeds, you can proceed to the implementation of the sequence of actions, which is presented below:

  1. Soaking selected nuts for 72 hours (water should be changed daily).
  2. Mixing seeds with sand and moistening them.
  3. Placement of nuts in a cloth bag, which fits into a wooden box with ventilation holes.

The final step at this stage is to place the seed container in the refrigerator. There they should spend about 5 months at a temperature of 3-6 ° C, that is, in conditions close to winter, but not harsh.

In the future, pine nuts should be checked regularly to maintain moisture and prevent mold. If it appeared on some seeds, then you need to get rid of them, and replace the sand with a new one.

Pot and soil requirements

While the seeds are in the refrigerator, you can do another important thing - preparing a place for their future planting. It should not be large: it is quite possible to germinate pine nuts in a pot that can hold about 200 g of soil mixture, which can be:

  • natural forest;
  • loamy;
  • containing a large amount of humus.

If the gardener cannot spend time looking for suitable soil in which to plant cedar, then he can always buy a ready-made composition for coniferous plants in a specialized store. The choice of soil should be approached responsibly, because the future of the plant directly depends on its composition.

Cedar needs potassium, and a high nitrogen content is contraindicated for it due to the inhibitory effect on its root system.

Planting and watering rules

The probability of growing cedar at home increases if you plant a nutlet in March or April. There are other useful recommendations that help to accurately solve this problem:

  • the optimal seed planting depth is from 0.5 to 2 cm;
  • you can place nuts close enough to each other (10 mm or more);
  • top seeds are sprinkled with sawdust or needles;
  • in the pot it is necessary to place the maximum possible number of nuts.

The last point is explained by the fact that in most cases only 10-15% of the seeds can germinate, that is, one out of seven or even ten nuts.

Particular attention must be paid to watering. Despite the fact that cedar belongs to moisture-loving plants, it perceives flooding negatively, and therefore it is extremely important to adhere to the following rules:

  1. Nuts planted in the ground, it is desirable to spray from a spray bottle. This allows you to reduce the leaching of plant-friendly substances that are in the upper soil layer.
  2. Before you start watering, you should determine the degree of soil moisture. To do this, simply stick a match into it: if it turns out to be wet, then it is necessary to wait a little with the implementation of the planned procedure.
  3. The recommended frequency of watering seeds after planting is once every 2 days. If moistening is carried out less often, then the cedar grows much more slowly - experiencing great difficulties in reaching the surface and being characterized by a weak development of the root system.

The temperature should be room temperature, i.e., be in the range of 18–22 ° C. It is advisable to exclude the presence of the pot in direct sunlight, it is much better to place it in the shade.

Provided that all the above points are taken into account, the seeds germinate relatively quickly: about a month after planting. True, many gardeners call other terms - up to 90 days, explaining this by the difference in the quality of the selected nuts. Further, the pot can be placed in a brighter place, provided that the exposure to sunlight is moderate.

Further actions

It is worth noting that growing a cedar from a nut is a rather lengthy process, and therefore the appearance of sprouts should not be considered an unconditional success. Cedar in terms of development rate is noticeably inferior to most coniferous and deciduous trees. Observant gardeners have found that cedars grown from seeds at home add only 6-7 cm per year in the first few years.

In the first year, small cedars cannot be planted in open ground in a country house or local area, because they need this time to strengthen and adapt. The latter will pass faster if you take the pot outside in the warm season.

Transplantation of small cedar trees can be carried out for 2-3 years of their life. The procedure is tolerated by them without much difficulty, especially if the gardener takes into account the following points:

  1. Plant roots must be handled with care. When transplanting cedar shoots into open ground, bends and fractures of its roots should be avoided.
  2. The best transplant option is with a clod of earth from a pot. In this way, the microflora to which the plant is accustomed is preserved, which means that the chances of its successful adaptation in a new place are significantly increased.
  3. It is not worth refusing to feed cedar - even if the land in the country house or house adjoining area is fertile enough. For this purpose, nitrogen-potassium-phosphorus fertilizers are optimally suited.
  4. It makes sense to place several stones around the trunk of a growing tree. Gradually, their lower surface will be covered with fungal growth, which has a very beneficial effect on the cedar.

Another useful procedure for a growing cedar is soil mulching. With its help, you can minimize the drying of the soil, stimulate the growth of grass around a young tree, and create an optimal microclimate for cedar. The composition of the mulch is recommended to include coniferous needles, fallen leaves and mowed grasses.

Cedar is an evergreen coniferous tree. It represents strength, health, beauty, longevity and purity. Cultivation of cedar is a noble cause, but extremely laborious. Of course, the easiest way is to buy ready-made seedlings, because after planting they will require practically no maintenance, except for regular soil moisture. But it is much better to grow a cedar from a nut - this way you will be next to your tree from the first minutes, and when, after many years, it will spread its rich crown above the ground, the pleasure will be incomparable.

How to grow a cedar from a nut at home?

  1. Nuts purchased at a grocery store or market are not suitable for growing cedar, as they are cooked for consumption by boiling in salted water. Your best bet is to find a flat, pleasant-smelling cedar cone with no signs of mold or staleness.
  2. Remove the nuts from the cone and rinse with warm water. Additionally, you can rub the shell with a toothbrush or sponge - this will wash off the resin, which blocks moisture from accessing the core itself.
  3. After you have cleaned the nuts of excess resin, you need to stratify, that is, keep them in cold (about 0 ° C) water for three days, changing the water once a day. After this time, you will notice that some of the seeds have risen to the surface of the water, and some have sunk to the bottom. Floating nuts are empty or of poor quality, even if planted correctly, they will not sprout, but sunken seeds can and should be planted in the ground.
  4. After three days, drain the water and mix the nuts with peat, forest soil or coarse washed sand, then slightly moisten the mixture and place it in a wooden box with air holes or a perforated flower pot. After all the manipulations, the container with nuts can be removed in a dark, cool place - now the seeds should lie for several months (from 3 to 6 to simulate a natural winter) at a temperature of about + 4 ° C. Once every couple of weeks, take out the seeds and moisten the soil. Try to guess the time so that the planting of seeds takes place in March-April.
  5. After a long preparation of seeds, you can finally start planting. The soil is better to use natural forest, but in the absence of such, you can buy special soil for conifers in a flower shop. The volume of the pot should be small, about 200 grams, and the planting depth should be about 2 cm. Seeds can be sprinkled on top with needles or sawdust. Protect the sown seeds from high temperatures and bright sun: it is better to put the pot with the future tree in a shaded place with a temperature of 18-20 ° C. And, of course, the earth should be periodically moistened, at the same time preventing the seeds from “flooding”.
  6. It is best to plant the maximum number of seeds, because only 10-15% of them will sprout. Depending on the quality of the seeds, the first sprouts will sprout in 2-3 months and will be barely noticeable - up to five years, the cedar grows very slowly, and the growth is up to 6-7 cm. By the third year of life, the sprout can reach 15 cm, and after five to six years, it can be planted in open space.
  7. Cedar loves well-drained rocky or loamy soils. Therefore, it is advisable to mix the soil at the site of the proposed planting of cedar with sand and gravel.

There is another interesting nuance: they say that before planting, you need to hold pine nuts in your mouth for several minutes - this is how the future tree will absorb your energy and information about you, and only then will it truly grow into your grateful cedar. Of course, this moment is very similar to superstition, but in the first years of life, the cedar definitely needs your love and care.

Ornamental coniferous plants capture with their grace and beauty. Since it is possible to grow various forms for our climatic zone, the question arises, how to grow a cedar from a nut? A few facts about the cultivation and properties of the plant will help answer the problem.

Features of cedar wood

You need to know the characteristics of the plant in order to understand how to grow cedar. This evergreen plant attracts the eyes of gardeners due to its appearance features:

  • lush paws;
  • densely set profuse covering with needles;
  • rich green color;
  • beautiful bumps;
  • high straight trunk;
  • bright bark;
  • nice smell.

Growing a plant requires patience and careful adherence to all instructions. But the result can amaze the most demanding esthete. Because cedar can ennoble any area.

The cedar has a tall, straight trunk

The root system of the tree is strongly pronounced. The main root is surrounded by strong lateral branches, it keeps well in the soil. What makes it possible for the plant to hold a lump. Covering the area around the trunk with its needles, cedar creates a special temperature and exchange regime.

Collection of seed material

One of the sources of seed material may be its natural growing conditions. To do this, it is not necessary to visit the cedar forest; for the necessary samples, you can go to the nearest botanical garden or write out seeds from the forestry.

You need to get the seeds in the cone. Since various processes can occur during transportation with a nut:

  • drying out;
  • frostbite;
  • damage by various insects;
  • loss of surface integrity;
  • debate.

In a cone, they are protected from external mechanical and climatic influences. You should not buy nuts in a store or in the markets, as the seeds are treated with hot oil for culinary purposes. This means that they are no longer suitable for landing.

Where to get the necessary seed composition

For a novice gardener, an important question is where to get the necessary material. Buying samples from unverified sources does not guarantee the germination and viability of the seeds. You can write out cedar seeds through:

  • garden societies;
  • botanical gardens;
  • departments of botany and horticulture of universities;
  • thanks to independent sellers;
  • from forestry;
  • through seed almanacs.

Any of the methods will make it possible to obtain the required amount for germination and planting. To be sure of the result, it is worth ordering several cones at once. Pay attention to the date of collection of cones, they should have been taken in the period October-November. The date of collection is important, the average duration of seed germination is 2 years.

Pay attention to the collection period

What soils does it grow on

When preparing, it is necessary to take into account an important fact when planning to undertake germination. One of the most significant factors in successfully obtaining resistant planting material where cedar grows. Knowledge of this issue increases the likelihood of obtaining normal seedlings.

In nature, cedar trees love gray podzols. This soil is:

  • humus;
  • silica;
  • trivalent metals;
  • sulfonic acids;
  • loams;
  • orstein grains;
  • forest floor.

Such soils are considered characteristic for:

  • Siberia;
  • Southern Canada;
  • Northern Europe;
  • Far East;
  • Central USA.

They have a pronounced shape. Gray loose composition from the upper horizon, denser reddish hue lower. Accordingly, germinated seed material should be planted in similar conditions.

Germination preparation requirements

To germinate pine nuts, you can carry out preliminary preparation:

  • soak the seeds in an aqueous solution with the addition of Kornevin;
  • endure a three-day period;
  • once a day to change the aquatic environment;
  • mix with purified river sand;
  • place in a canvas bag;
  • the container must have holes for air;
  • place in the refrigerator;
  • remove moldy specimens.

It is better to use small containers for seedlings

The next step will be planting the material:

  • after 6 months, land in the ground;
  • the substrate must contain a large amount of sand;
  • hole depth 1 cm;
  • the storage location of the container must be at room temperature;
  • the germinated material is brought to light.

Thus, seedlings suitable for further planting are obtained.

Grow container

Many are wondering how to grow a cedar from a nut in home pots. First rule, it shouldn't be too old. Even after treatment with manganese, the likelihood of mold is high.

It is better to use small containers for seedlings connected in palettes. They have a shallow depth, make it easy to extract the plant. Moreover, in this embodiment, it is easy to observe them. Any material will do, since the plant is only temporarily enclosed in a container.

You need to water a cedar seedling from a spray bottle

Watering mode

Water the plant with a spray bottle. To avoid washing out the necessary substances from the soil. The most common method is to check how dry the soil is with a match. Moisturize as needed, no longer than one day apart.

Moisture requirements are necessary because the sprout has to break through a thick skin. Gradual soaking of the surface gives a kind of swelling effect, after which the sprout can violate the integrity of the cover.

Successful germination can be achieved by adding one serving of various growth stimulants. Dosage guidance is indicated on the package. This will make it possible to obtain the necessary planting material more efficiently. Do not flood the plant, as this can cause it to rot.

When planting a nut in the soil, it should have an average temperature

Temperature regime

When planting a nut in the soil, it should have an average temperature, since under natural conditions the seed has similar conditions. After the first shoots appear, it is necessary to add surface heating. This can be done with a lamp, turning it on for several hours. Or by placing palettes with sprouts in a more lit place. During this period, you should carefully monitor the watering, you will have to moisten every day.
